ISO 24223:2026 expands dairy sample-preparation guidance beyond cheese
The second edition, published on 6 November, covers milk and milk products between sampling and method-specific preparation.
The International Organization for Standardization published ISO 24223:2026, second edition, 'Milk and milk products — Guidance on sample preparation for physical and chemical testing', on 6 November 2026. It guides preparation for physical and chemical testing, including instrumental analysis. It is a published international standard. ISO's public information does not establish mandatory adoption in Japan, a corresponding JIS adoption, or a transition period.

The first edition, ISO 24223:2021, was titled 'Cheese — Guidance on sample preparation for physical and chemical testing' and is now withdrawn. Comparing ISO's free abstracts shows that the scope has broadened from cheeses to milk and milk products. The new edition addresses subsampling and preparation after sampling under ISO 707 | IDF 50 and before method-specific preparation. Its abstract notes that volatile substances, minor components and allergens can need extra care to avoid loss or contamination.
Dairy laboratories should compare the editions when reviewing post-receipt subsampling and homogenization procedures and check which version a customer or scheme requires. The paid full text is needed before changing detailed conditions or validation steps; those cannot be inferred from the free abstract alone.
