ISO publishes two methods for aerosol mass and nicotine in heated tobacco products

ISO 18722-1:2026 and ISO 18722-2:2026 cover different heating systems and reference different ISO 5501 puffing regimes.

The International Organization for Standardization published the first editions of ISO 18722-1:2026 and ISO 18722-2:2026 on 28 October 2026. Part 1 covers electrically heated tobacco products and Part 2 covers aerosol heated tobacco products. Both are international standards developed by ISO/TC 126. Adoption as a Japanese Industrial Standard or mandatory application under Japanese law has not been confirmed.

ISO's freely available abstracts specify determination of aerosol collected mass and nicotine from a product used with a specified heating device. Part 1 refers to the ISO 5501-1 puffing regime; Part 2 refers to ISO 5501-2. The full standards are paid publications, so detailed collection, extraction, quantification, calculation and precision requirements must be checked in the texts before a laboratory changes its procedure. No Japanese implementation date or transition period has been announced.
