US EPA begins non-target screening research for drinking water

The research surveys pharmaceuticals, PFAS, more than 1,000 candidate chemicals and unknowns; it does not set regulatory limits.

The US Environmental Protection Agency launched research using non-target analysis to screen drinking water for a broad range of potential contaminants, including pharmaceuticals, PFAS, more than 1,000 candidate compounds and unknown substances.

The project may help prioritise future monitoring. It does not itself establish a regulated analyte list, numerical limit or official compliance method, so laboratories should not treat research targets as mandatory reporting parameters.
